About Us

Softball was played at school and tertiary level since time in memorial. Mahwelereng was not an
exception, as softball came through students and teachers working in Mokopane college of education and other private or missionary schools. It was on 19th May 1976 Mahwelereng Softball Club was founded by men like Kattane “Kat man” Thema who was playing in Mokopane, Abia “Man Alone” Mathobela, Benny “Boster” Mathobela, Zaccaria Zett Makgatho, Rufus Phala, Lefty Teffo, Lesibana Ledwaba, Banda Makgatho, Konya Machochoane, Perry Kekana and Abraham Shadow Kgosana .

The first historical meeting was held in 1976 May 19th hosted at Mr Kattane “Kat man” Thema’s home in Zone1,Di-four, small Zozo/Kokoishi. So softball was played mainly in boding schools, missionary schools and at the colleges. Softball was introduced to schools in Mahwelereng; Gojela high school, Mokopane and Madikana high school.

Mahwelereng softball club continue to play slow pitch softball without gloves and balls without gloves. They played bare handed from 1976 till the club nearly died a slow death by early 1978.It was the arrival of the convener Buti Seroka coming back from Pretoria that set-off resurrection of the softball club in 1978,9th September when Buti Joshua Seroka, Tebogo Dammie joined by those who are from Mahwelereng Softball club, Perry Kekana, Konya Machochoane and Shadow Kgosana came together at Seroka House, Di-five and formed the Mahwelereng Spikes softball club with one bat and three
softball mats. Buti Seroka came with the name Continental and the name was rejected in the same meeting. The name Spikes was adopted from Perry Kekana, Konya Machochoane and Shadow Kgosana which then became the official birth of Mahwelereng Spikes Softball club on 9th September 1978.
